Obituary for Joseph A. Buonagurio

Joseph A. Buonagurio, 93 of Carmel, NY, formerly of Yonkers, NY passed away at home on May 7, 2023. He was born to Joseph and Ausilia (Ruocco) Buonagurio on November 7th, 1929 in The Bronx.
Joseph graduated from Cardinal Hayes H.S. in The Bronx and went on to obtain both Baccalaureate and Master’s degrees from New York University. Joseph proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the period of the Korean War He went on to a long and distinguished career serving as a High School Music teacher in the New York City Public School System for over 35 years.
Joseph is survived and deeply missed by his wife of 69 years Rose (Giuliano) and his children Deborah (William) of Rye, NY, Joseph P. (Maria) of Yorktown Heights, NY, Mark (Debbie) of Scarsdale, NY and David (Roxanne) of Yorktown Heights, NY. He is remembered and cherished by his grandchildren Brianna (Michael) Buonagurio, Amanda, Evan and Dean. Another grandson, Joseph T. Buonagurio, predeceased him in 2009.
Joseph was a master pianist, both in the classical and contemporary styles and touched everyone with his virtuosity. For many years he served as the organist at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Arthur Ave. neighborhood of The Bronx. An avid fan of the NY Yankees, he also enjoyed gardening, bowling and his fellow knights at the Knights of Columbus Council. For many years Joseph and Rose wintered in Florida in Highland Beach. Nothing gave Joseph more pleasure than a fine Italian meal with his family.
The family will receive friends on Monday May 15th from 9:00AM – 10:30 AM at the Balsamo-Cordovano Funeral home in Carmel, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James R.C. Church at 11:00 AM on the same day. Burial to follow at the Rose Hills Cemetery in Putnam Valley, NY.
