Obituary for Jerry Galella
After a hard-fought battle with an aggressive cancer, Jerry Galella passed away on March 15, 2020 while in Hospice Care at the age of 67. He leaves behind his wife, Linda Galella; their three children, Danielle Youngman, Gerard Galella Jr., and Anthony Galella.
Jerry was born on November 25, 1952 in Bronx, NY to father Frank Galella and mother Antoinette Galella. He grew up in the Bronx with two brothers, one of them his twin brother, Freddy Galella, and his younger brother, Frank Galella.
Jerry married Linda Catalano on July 7, 1977 at St. Mary’s Church in the Bronx, New York. They first met each other when he was in the 7th grade and Linda was in the 6th grade. They lived in the Bronx before settling in Kent, New York in the winter of 1982. There Jerry and Linda lived for the past 37 years and raised three children; Danielle, Gerard, and Anthony.
Jerry was an active and dedicated member of his community as a youth baseball coach to his sons to and his decades of support to local churches and groups in Yonkers, NY where he worked as a store manager at Shoprite, donating his time, food and financial resources.
He had a tremendous love for baseball and the Yankees. His greatest love was being a devoted dad to his three kids and grandfather to his seven grandchildren. As an enthusiastic grandpa, you could see his face light up whenever he was around them, talking about them and had a special connection with each of them. They each have their own special memories of their grandpa to cherish as he made sure to spend quality time with each of them doing what they loved.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Linda Galella; three children, Danielle Youngman, Gerard Frank Galella, Jr, and Anthony Galella and their spouses Fred Youngman, Amanda Galella and Erin Galella; seven grandchildren, Anthony Bruno, Lena Youngman, Will Galella, Addie Galella, Izzy Galella, Jules Galella, and Emmie Galella; as well as his brothers, his twin Freddy Galella and, Frank Galella and their spouses. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Jerry requested to be cremated, his ashes will spread in a handful of locations that where extremely special to him and his family. Those spots are the Chuang Yen Monastery, Ryan’s Field (Baseball Field), and Lake Nimham near his home. A Memorial Service will be held at Balsamo Cordovano Funeral Home in Carmel, New York on Tuesday March 24 from 3pm to 7pm; all are welcome.
The family would especially like to thank the staff at Columbia Presbyterian and Putnam Hospital for their constant, attentive treatment to Jerry and his family during this difficult time. The family welcomes donations to a charity of your choice as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.
