Obituary for Marie S. O'Brien

Marie Sullivan O’Brien of Mohegan Lake/Carmel, NY and long time resident of Northport, LI, passed away April 26 at the age of 87. Beloved Mother of Erin, Sean (Diane), Neil (Martha), Sheila, Maureen (Frank) and Peter (Ichu), “Mio” was the loving Grandmother of Shannon, Kate, Tara, Brian, Colleen, Nicole, Monica, Michael, Kelly and Shayne and Great Grandmother of Isla, Dylan, Liam and Stella. She is pre-deceased by her brothers, Thomas Joseph (Junior,) John Francis (Jackie,) and Aunt Molly McCarthy. Marie is survived by her Sister-in-Law, Mary Sullivan and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Born May 31, 1926 to Thomas and Ellen Sullivan, Marie was raised in Floral Park, NY. She earned her nursing degree from Manhattanville College and achieved Master’s and Doctoral degrees in gerontology and Nursing Education. In addition to her unfailing commitment to family, Marie had a long distinguished professional career and was sought after for her expertise in nursing education and state/ national health care policy.
After retirement, Marie was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and was involved with local Hospice care and the Putnam Community Action Program. She was a faithful parishioner and greeter at St. James R.C. Church in Carmel, NY and later at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Shrub Oak. She was a proud member of the Putnam County Emerald Association and a steadfast supporter of any worthy cause that came her way.
Following retirement, Marie had the opportunity to pursue personal passions. She had the experience of traveling extensively throughout the US, Canada and Europe. She was an avid reader, Bridge Master and developed a new love of golf - and achieved the coveted “hole-in-one!” Her greatest loves were spending time with family and friends.
Services will be held at Balsamo-Cordovano Funeral Home 15 Church St. Carmel, NY (845) 225-244.On Thursday May 1 from 2-4 & 7-9pm with a mass held at St. James the Apostle R.C.
